It is possible to experience a cardiac event as a result of stress. Stress can trigger various physiological responses that may contribute to cardiovascular problems. Acute stress can lead to increased heart rate and blood pressure, which can strain the heart. Chronic stress may contribute to the development of heart disease by promoting unhealthy behaviors such as poor diet, physical inactivity, and smoking.
Moreover, stress can lead to the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which can directly affect the cardiovascular system. In some cases, extreme stress can lead to a condition known as stress-induced cardiomyopathy or ‘broken heart syndrome,’ which mimics the symptoms of a heart attack.
It is important for individuals to manage stress through healthy lifestyle choices, such as regular physical activity, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress-reduction techniques like mindfulness or meditation.
